Where to Find Cannabis Writers (And What to Avoid)

So you’re looking to hire someone to take your content needs off your hands. Good choice. Running a compliant legal cannabis business can taxing. The last thing you want to have to focus on is writing your own content. But if you’re wondering where to find cannabis writers and don’t know where to look, you may end up back where you started, writing content when you should be focusing on other important tasks to help your company succeed.

You may be tempted to just hop on a job board website like Upwork or Fiverr to find a new writer. After all, new freelancers are always jumping at the occasion to write and prove their worthiness. Some people think this is the best of both worlds. They get a cheap writer and they’re helping someone get experience. Unfortunately, this is not usually the case.

Hiring a freelancer who is not well-versed in the legal cannabis space can make your brand look less credible at best and can get you in serious trouble at worst.

Here’s why:

Freelance cannabis writers know the industry rules

As a freelance cannabis writer, I’ve written for several legal states and they all have different requirements. For some of my clients, I can use certain words, whereas I have to avoid a long list of words for others to stay compliant.

If you hire a writer who does not know how to remain compliant in their writing, you can lose your social media accounts or even be faced with penalties for false claims.

A quality cannabis writer will have the tools to cater to your audience

I write in a wide variety of brand voices every day. I’m used to switching my vocabulary, tone, and style to fit any client’s needs. This is often not the case when you pick up a random writer just looking to get some experience under their belt.

Freelance cannabis writers have done the work again and again. They know what kind of writing converts, and what falls flat. It’s a saturated market out there. You don’t want your content to get lost in the mix right from the start.

Many qualified freelance writers are good at SEO

You don’t want to spend your valuable time teaching people how to optimize pages for better search results. In fact, you may not even know how to do it yourself. You know who also typically doesn’t know? Random writers looking for experience. It takes a lot of time and hands-on work to understand the ins and outs of search engine optimization. It gets even more complicated when you are optimizing pages for a very popular industry that is still barred from using traditional ad methods.

I and other good freelance cannabis writers know how to optimize your blogs and articles so they will actually drive in more traffic. That’s what you’re paying for anyway, right? Don’t waste your time with blogs that just take up space on the page. Produce content that truly converts.

Where to find freelance cannabis writers

Occasionally, will find a gem of a writer on job boards. But my best advice is to find someone with a professional website that showcases their portfolio and previous work.

Google searches for cannabis writers are often the best starting point. Or, you can get connected with a marketing agency. If you’re looking to avoid the agencies and just have a contractor who has your back, the best way to find freelance writers is to look for them on Google and to reach out to writers you like. If you see an article you find useful, find the author and see if they are available.
