Compliant content marketing for regulated industries can be tough...

Med spa owners and marketing professionals know all about the perils of advertising in this highly regulated industry. You can’t make specific claims or promise guaranteed results. You’re operating in a space that is high risk for compliance issues and requires an in-depth understanding of state and federal laws. SEO for med spas can take your marketing efforts to the next level when done right. Here are some med spa SEO strategies that actually work.

Med spa writer mistakes

When hiring a med spa writer, some companies hire the first writer they find assuming that they simply need a good writer. But in this highly regulated industry, good writers aren’t enough to keep your company compliant and free from penalties.

Here are some of the most common med spa marketing mistakes writers make:

  • Overpromising results
  • Med spa writers shouldn’t make claims that promise specific results. If your SEO writer says things like “smoother skin in 24 hours, guaranteed” you’re looking at trouble.
  • Using concrete language
  • If your freelance med spa writer uses words like “guaranteed” or even indicates that something will happen as a result of your treatment, you could be dealing with noncompliant language. They should always be using softer, non-committed langauge like “is designed to” or “is suggested to” or “may help with.”
  • Describing non-FDA approved uses
  • Even if it’s legal for your team to perform certain procedures for certain results, if it’s not an FDA-approved use, your med spa SEO writer should not be talking about it without extremely careful language.

Focus on education for med spa content marketing

The key to successful content marketing for med spa companies is education. It’s the same framework for all highly regulated industry content marketing: focus on education, don’t make medical claims, and understand state and federal law.

This focus on education is how I first built my cannabis content marketing business. I knew that brands needed compliance-aware freelance cannabis writers who could create content that educates AND converts, without any compliance risks. So I figured out how to successfully build SEO strategies for highly regulated industries. Now, I take those same services beyond cannabis and help med spas, supplement brands, and other highly regulated companies find success.

So when it comes to successful med spa marketing, education is key. Think about the questions your potential customers are asking and how your brand can provide answers. By offering guidance and education, you position yourself as a trusted, authoritative expert–which is exactly what you need to convert casual browsers into paying customers.

SEO for med spas: answer important questions

Here are some examples of med spa content that converts:

  • Do chemical peels hurt?
  • Is laser hair removal permanent?
  • How do I cover acne scars?

These topics give you plenty of room to educate your potential customers without making any guaranteed claims. For example, you can answer the chemical peel question with anecdotal information you’ve heard from customers, while noting that the experience varies from person to person. You can easily create a converting SEO blog that makes zero medical claims about chemical peels with this one baseline question.

Likewise, the topic of acne scars gives you a lot of space to provide meaningful insight into covering acne scars. You can talk about how some people prefer to use creams and topical solutions while others simply cover their scars with makeup. At the end of the blog, you can mention the services you provide to cover acne scars, without promising results. Phrases like “our acne scar treatment is designed to help reduce the appearance of acne scars, though results vary from person to person”
