What do blogs do for brands? How long until they start to rank?

As a freelance writer for hire who talks with a lot of different business owners, I have picked up on many trends. As it turns out, a lot of people don’t understand the value or logistics behind blogs used for marketing purposes. That’s okay. As a business owner, your job is to grow the business, not understand the ins and outs of every mechanism that might help. To save myself time, and to make life easier for potential clients and businesses looking to hire a freelance writer, here’s what you need to know when you hire a freelance writer for blogs:

The basics: why does my brand need a blog?

When I was younger, the saying “you don’t need to floss all your teeth, you just have to floss the ones you want to keep” really stuck with me. I look at content marketing with blogs the same way. You don’t have to use a blog for your company, you only have to use one if you want to grow your business.

There are always exceptions to this, but as a general rule, it rings true. When I look at the top companies in the wellness space, most of the successful ones are currently or have previously utilized content marketing with blogs to grow the brand.

Here’s why your company can benefit from a blog:

  • Optimized blogs drive traffic from your target audience for brand awareness and increased conversions.
  • Blogs capture what people are actively looking for before they’re ready to make a purchase. Your content could be the final deciding factor.
  • Blogs establish credibility and authority, building trust among your potential customers.
  • People generally don’t trust brands they’ve never heard of. Valuable, specific content builds credibility before your target audience has even considered making a purchase.
  • Consistent blogs build topical authority. Google will associate your company with a niche, boosting rankings across all pages.
  • Blogs can provide solutions for problem-aware buyers
  • They’re especially useful to target people who are aware of a problem but haven’t even considered a solution yet.
  • No reliance on paid advertising
  • Ads can get taken down or lose effectiveness, especially in highly regulated industries. Blogs circumvent this problem and continue to build authority as time passes.
  • Blogs are a key part of the content ecosystem
  • One blog can get repurposed as a LinkedIn post, portion of an email newsletter, social media post, and sales collateral.
  • Blogs can position your team as experts in the space
  • This can be especially useful for startups and those operating in highly regulated spaces, where press coverage can be difficult to acquire.

When will my blogs start to rank?

This is where some business owners get impatient and frustrated. No, your blog isn’t going to suddenly start ranking a few days after you publish it. This is one of the biggest pain points faced when brands hire a freelance blog writer. They expect quick results, not understanding that blogs are a part of the long game.

Most blogs take at least a few months to begin ranking and even longer for serious, meaningful traffic to roll in
. Blog marketing can be incredibly effective but it’s not a quick fix. It’s a part of a longer, more intentional strategy.

How to boost your blog while you wait to rank

You don’t have to sit back and do nothing as you wait for your blogs to begin ranking. You should continue to be proactive about your blog strategy and keep the content flowing.

When I speak with brands seeking a blog writer for hire, I always let them know that blogs take time and the more you post, the more results you’ll see when they do eventually rank.

I don’t recommend companies start with at least four blogs a month because I want more money, I recommend it because it’s what works the fastest (in fact, eight per month is an even better place to start). The more optimized content on your site when Google starts indexing your pages, the quicker you’ll see your rankings grow and traffic increase. If there’s just a few blogs on your site, there’s not a lot of traction to pick up.

So my top recommendation to boost your blog while you wait is to continue posting regularly. The results will pay off, if you use a blog writer who knows what they’re doing.

You can also use
Google Search Console to request Google index your pages quicker. Doing so can speed up the process and allow you to see results quicker.

Hire a freelance blog writer

Here’s the thing about all of the info provided above: blogs don’t magically make your content start ranking at the top of Google searches. Well optimized, expert content written by expert SEO blog writers will.

You need to have a thorough understanding of SEO best practices, the algorithm, and your target audience and their search intent before you can produce a solid SEO strategy. If you’re a business owner, you probably don’t have time to become an expert in this space, too.

That’s where freelance blog writers come in. Whether you’re looking for a wellness blog writer to boost your brand, a cannabis content writer who can help you rank and stand out, or a med spa blog writer who understands search engine optimization and regulated content, you’ve found your solution right here.

Let me address the bias here: I am a freelance cannabis writer and journalist. I have lost some clients to AI. I have good reason to dislike artificial intelligence and feel nervous about its proliferation across the industry (and our world.) I’m not completely out of touch, though. I know that most of the cannabis industry is low on capital and big on cutting costs. I also spend enough time on the internet to know that nuance is a dying breed. I hope that readers will engage via thoughtful comments if they disagree with any of these points because there’s room for all of us to learn from one another. With that said, here’s my take on AI cannabis marketing tactics:

I try to avoid the endless think pieces that pollute my LinkedIn feed, but with so many self-proclaimed thought leaders in the space, it’s a bit of a fool’s errand. One of the topics I see time and time again is the question of whether AI has killed content marketing, leaving writers scrambling to compete with ChatGPT and the like. In some ways, yes, AI has afforded brands the ability to create content without hiring freelance cannabis writers. Naturally, those who can’t pivot may find themselves out of work. But here’s the thing: Cannabis SEO strategies are still important. Like everything in our rapidly changing digital world, savvy marketers need to pivot to stay on top of the latest trends.

This is a more personal update than usual, but an important one. I’m a full-time freelance cannabis writer again! While unfortunate that my last role as the assistant editor of a cannabis industry publication has ended, I’m excited about the next chapter of working for myself again. Here are some things I learned while working in my last role: I am extremely invested in the success of the small players in the industry Corporate greed is everywhere in the cannabis world I love interviewing and highlighting the stories of social equity and minority-owned cannabis businesses Indigenous cannabis is going to continue to grow and thrive, and I am so excited about it Storytelling is so important When I first got the role as the assistant editor, I had primarily been working behind the scenes with companies crafting blogs, articles, and website content for their cannabis businesses. But I also had lots of journalistic experience and had written similar industry-centric pieces for Wikileaf before taking on the role. My time as the magazine’s assistant editor made me realize that the human element of cannabis is so important to me and that sharing compelling stories can do so much for a brand. All this to say: I want to write for your cannabis business! I’m a freelance cannabis writer of many years and I have worn many hats. I can ghostwrite web copy, articles, blogs, newsletters, and anything else for you. But I can also do the journalistic side of cannabis content, conducting interviews, crafting long features, news stories, or even writing product reviews. Send me an email today to get started.
